College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble horns rehears for Oct. 24 concert.

The College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall on campus, with tunes representing a variety of jazz styles from swing to funk.

“The band is really swinging this fall,” said Sparky Koerner, ensemble director and chairman of the Fine Arts Department.

“Round Midnight,” a ballad written by Thelonious Monk, will feature Terry Dunn on trumpet. Terry is a new member of the ensemble, joining many players who have been with the ensemble more than 10 years and some as many as 30.

From the Stan Kenton Library, the trombone section will be featured in Hank Levy’s “Decoupage,” a tune in 5/4 time signature. The famous harmonica player Toots Thielemans’ composition “Bluesette,” will be performed as a samba. A more contemporary chart in the funk style will be “Another Great Day,” written by Mark Taylor, former writer for the U.S. Army Jazz Blues Ensemble.

The award-winning ensemble will also play other selections and various members of the group will have improvised solos.
