Eight women from a women’s shelter in Galveston were treated to breakfast, free haircuts and manicures and pedicures by the College of the Mainland Cosmetology Club.

COM students, graduates and instructors also gave the women gift baskets of personal care products.

“I’ve been needing a pedicure. It’s stress relief,” said Tasha Jameson.

When asked her favorite part of the day, Stacy Wilson replied, “Her,” pointing to the student, Renee Montemayor, styling her hair. “She’s friendly and easy to talk to.”

“I like making people beautiful,” added Montemayor.

Brandy Taylor got a cut trimming her hair from below her shoulder to a bob just below her ear.

“It’s been a while, probably about a year since I got a cut. I had a picture and I knew what I wanted,” said Taylor.

Students in the COM Cosmetology Club also help with Project Cinderella, giving low-income high school students makeovers before prom. Professor Candice Edmonston is the advisor and arranged the event.

Alexandria Delany, 20, of La Marque, joined the club to complete service projects.

“I like helping people and making people feel good,” said Delany.

Professors Elaine Baker and Edmonston also recently traveled with seven students to Camp Periwinkle in Burton, Texas, for children with cancer. Students gave children spa treatments and lessons on styling new hair as it regrows.

The COM Cosmetology Program trains students to be cosmetologists, cosmetology instructors or estheticians.

The Salon at COM is open on Thursday and Friday for hair, manicure and pedicure appointments.
