COM students serving region
College of the Mainland students will again be ambassadors for community college students on a regional level.
COM was elected to serve as the parliamentarian school for Region V of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association.
“As a member of the parliamentarian school, I hope to learn how to communicate my goals and beliefs to a large group of people, as well as learn how to work better with others to reach a common goal,” said Cameryn Tam, of Friendswood, COM Student Government Association vice president. “I enjoy political activism and discussion, so I wanted to further that interest by becoming involved in student government.”
As parliamentarian school, the COM Student Government Association is charged with enforcing the provisions of Region V’s bylaws and constitution.
“Our students will also have the opportunity to work closely with other schools in the greater Houston area and plan two regional conventions,” said Sean Skipworth, COM professor and Student Government Association advisor.
The Texas Junior College Student Government Association provides student leaders with a venue to speak on student issues. During an annual convention the organization passes resolutions on issues affecting students and gives these resolutions to the Texas legislature.
“Students learn to make decisions, allocate resources and work with other students,” said Skipworth. “On regional level, they are building relationships and broadening their horizons. This COM students will help plan two professional development conferences on what makes a good SGA member.”
COM has previously served as student government association president college
“We have served on the region board in the past, and it was an excellent opportunity for students to develop leadership skills in a wider venue and consider issues that affect the greater Houston community,” said Skipworth. “I am proud of the outstanding student officers we have and of the job they do of serving as ambassadors for COM out in the community.”
