An ardent supporter of industrial education, LyondellBasell recently donated $10,000 to College of the Mainland Foundation to fund scholarships for process technology and occupational safety students.

“We’re thrilled to have LyondellBasell as a strong partner for many years. They have previously given $5,000 a year. This year they doubled it,” said Mary Ann Amelang, COM Vice President for Institutional Advancement and COM Foundation Executive Director.

Christina Tobias is one of the students benefiting from the scholarship.

“I am a single parent (with) two children,” said Tobias, who works full-time in addition to taking COM Occupational Safety and Health Technology Program classes. “It helps a lot.”

For years, LyondellBasell has supported the COM Process Technology Program through donations for scholarships and equipment.

“We have the privilege of hiring a number of COM students through our internship program,” said David Gosnay, operations manager for LyondellBasell in Channelview. “We have a number of COM students as operators and contributing to our success.”

Gosnay also is one of the industry representatives serving on the COM Process Technology Program advisory council, which regularly meets to ensure that COM curriculum keeps pace with industry trends.
