Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Clinical Program

The EMS Clinical Program at the College of the Mainland is an essential component of our Emergency Medical Services training, providing students with hands-on, real-world experience in pre-hospital and clinical settings. Designed to complement classroom instruction and practical skills labs, the clinical program ensures that students are fully prepared to deliver high-quality patient care in a variety of emergency medical situations.

What to Expect in the Clinical Program

Students will engage in supervised clinical rotations in diverse healthcare environments, including:

  • Hospital Settings: Emergency departments, intensive care units, operating rooms, and other specialty areas.
  • Pre-Hospital Settings: Ride-along experiences with EMS agencies, including ambulance services and fire
    departments.
  • Clinical Applications: We use the program EMCE https://emce.app/ for all skills tracking and scheduling. You can
    sign up for the site at any time without paying a fee until classes start. Immunization and required hospital training requires an account with MyClinical Exchange.

During clinical rotations, students will:

  • Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Practice patient assessment and treatment in real-time scenarios.
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of medical conditions and trauma situations.
  • Work alongside experienced paramedics, EMTs, nurses, and physicians.

Program Features

  • Structured Rotations: Students complete rotations in various clinical areas to gain a comprehensive understanding of patient care.
  • Skill Competency Development: Focus on mastering core basic EMT skills such as patient assessments, vital signs, bandaging and splinting, AED and CPR. Additionally Advanced EMTP skills such as airway management, IV therapy, medication administration, and cardiac monitoring.
  • Professional Mentorship: Learn under the guidance of skilled preceptors who provide feedback, support, and real-world insights.

Goals and Outcomes

The clinical program is designed to help students:

  • Transition seamlessly from the classroom to real-world patient care.
  • Build confidence in their ability to assess, stabilize, and manage medical and trauma patients.
  • Meeting the clinical hour requirements necessary for certification and licensure.

Eligibility and Requirements

Participation in the clinical program requires successful completion of prerequisite coursework and skills lab training.

Students must also meet specific requirements, such as:

  • Health screenings and immunizations
  • Background checks and drug screening
  • Current CPR certification
  • Mandatory Clinical Orientation will be held at 9 a.m. the first Saturday after the start of classes.

Through the EMS Clinical Program at College of the Mainland students gain hands-on experience and professional skills necessary to excel in the dynamic and rewarding field of emergency medical services.
