The College of the Mainland (COM) STEAM lecture hall was lively with color as students and staff joined for a film and discussion over the documentary, “The Freedom to Marry.” This behind-the-scenes film showed the movement that is The Freedom to Marry and the journey for legalization of same sex marriage across the United States. Highlighting the trials and tribulations that came with the movement, the film was periodically paused for discussion and questions over the topics and issues being shown. This event aided in creating open minded and healthy conversation over issues and injustices faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

For COM employee, Jennifer Denison, Pride Month serves as a celebration and reminder for students to have pride in who they are. “This is something that the College cares about, and they are seen,” Denison said. “They should be proud of who they are and do not have to worry about it here at College of the Mainland.”

Rounding out the month’s observations, the College will host the following on-campus community event:

  • Pride Month Celebration on Tuesday, June 27 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the STEAM building, room 120. Hear from guest speaker, Stephen Flowers with the United Way Galveston County Mainland as he speaks on his life and experiences as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
