What is the Student Government Association?

SGA stands for Student Government Association, which is a nationwide organization. Our Student Government Association is run under the Texas Junior College Student Government Association, a statewide organization of colleges in Texas.

Who is the Student Government Association?

An executive board comprised of students run Student Government Association. Two advisors help with the day-to-day work and provide guidance.

The executive board itself is comprised of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian and historian.

The SGA has many different purposes. It oversees all of College of the Mainland's clubs and communicates with the college leadership in order to voice student concerns.

What does the Student Government Association member do?

Each officer has duties listed in more detail in the constitution. However, an effective Student Government Association member usually represents student concerns at meetings, helps sponsor or co-sponsor events, attends conferences as necessary, and is kind and helpful, all while trying to ensure that the student body's voice is heard at College of the Mainland.

Why should I join the Student Government Association?

There are so many reasons! Being a member gives you the unique opportunity to learn leadership skills that can be used in school, work and in your community.

Joining makes you a part of something on campus and allows you to give a voice to the student body. As a member of SGA, you will have an opportunity to work closely with faculty, staff, and other students. You will forge relationships that will last a lifetime.

What are the qualifications for joining the Student Government Association?

To join the Student Government Association, you must be enrolled in at least six credit hours at COM, have at least a 3.0 GPA (varies by position) and be a person of good standing at the College, which means that you must be respectable, professional and behave well.
