Enjoy an Evening of Jazz
Kicking off Jazz Appreciation Month, the COM Jazz Ensemble will present an Evening of Jazz with the Texas City High School Jazz Band April 1 at 6 p.m. at the Texas City High School Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public.
“The first jazz recording was made in 1917, so we are celebrating 100 years of jazz,” said Sparky Koerner, director of the Jazz Ensemble. “We’re also promoting women’s accomplishments in jazz.”
Dr. Deb Scott, trombone player and professor at Stephen F. Austin University, will be the guest artist.
Scott is also the director of SFA's first jazz band, The Swingin’ Axes. She was the first woman to complete the doctorate in trombone performance from the University of North Texas. Scott has been a featured soloist in many recitals and concerts with bands and orchestras in Texas and she has toured with performing groups in Europe.
In 2016, she was a featured soloist and faculty member in Santa Fe, Argentina, at Trombonanza. She has also been featured in the Canadian radio broadcast, Women in Brass. On Feb. 15 Navona Records released Scott’s first solo CD, "Playing Favorites."
Partial funding for this concert has been made possible through a grant from the Jazz Education Network and the Herb Alpert Foundation.
