Free jazz concert Oct. 18
The College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble will showcase their versatility with a free concert featuring swing, Latin, jazz and the blues on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall.
An upbeat swing tune “Lady Bird” written by Tadd Dameron to honor Billy Holiday will kick off the concert. “Tanganova” by Mike Mossman combines two styles: the Brazilian bossa nova and the tango. Blues, the backbone of all jazz, will allow the ensemble to improvise with “Aaron’s Blues.”
“Music from the Count Basie Orchestra is always a must on a jazz concert, and we will play the arrangement by Billy Byers on ‘All of Me’ as recorded by the Count,” said director Sparky Koerner. “Plus, a great standard that will get everyone’s toes tapping is the classic ‘In The Mood’ from the Glenn Miller Orchestra.”
The COM Jazz Ensemble has played across the nation and won awards at the Jazz Education Network Conference. It is open to community members and students who want to play in a collaborative environment.
